At first, the children seemed fine.

The five siblings hung out like normal kids. They snacked, laughed and played together. Three of the girls proved excellent at jumping rope, two taking turns holding the rope while the third jumped.

Only one girl, the oldest, showed signs that something was wrong. She sat off to one side, expression dark, tugging on her hair.

As time passed, however, cracks began to show. Laughter dissolved into weeping. Play warped into panic. Comfortable conversations turned to screams of fear and confusion.

From the next room, a rescue agent, Caleb, wiped tears from his eyes as he watched gentle social workers try to comfort the overwhelmed siblings.

That’s the reality of trauma in children,” he said. “Kids who swing between bursts of joy and sudden emotional collapse.”

Hours earlier, the children had been rescued from sex trafficking. Their mother had been exploiting them both online and in person, primarily offering live “shows” to paying paedophiles over the web. Today, however, she’d been attempting to sell her children for sex in person.

Fortunately, the “customer” was actually Caleb, an undercover Destiny Rescue agent working in collaboration with the Philippines National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

The case actually began on the other side of the world. After arresting a child predator, the Canadian Royal Mounted Police informed Filipino authorities that their suspect had been receiving child sexual abuse material (CSAM) from the Philippines. The NBI has long trusted Destiny Rescue agents’ expertise in human trafficking, so they called our team in to assist with the case.

Under the NBI’s direction, Caleb posed as a child sex buyer.

The rest was a well-rehearsed routine our agents have played out dozens of times: money changed hands, Caleb gave the “go” signal, officers rushed in to secure the suspect, and social workers followed to care for the survivors.

While waiting for government social workers to arrive, Destiny Rescue caseworkers took the lead in caring for these children. It’s a daunting task, fraught with emotional volatility and confusion that must be handled with expert care and infinite patience.

“Our social workers were incredible,” Caleb said. “Their role is exhausting—long, emotional, and relentless—but they handled it with dedication.”

Their work was compounded by the extensive brainwashing that the survivors had received from their parents.

The five girls, ranging in age from 17 to just 6 years old, had endured sexual exploitation for years. They’d been taught that there was nothing wrong with the “family business,” groomed and manipulated to think that the pain and humiliation they were forced to endure was normal.

For them, exploitation was just part of life. To them, it was normal.

They didn’t see the raid as a rescue; they felt like they’d been kidnapped.

They didn’t think of their mother as a human trafficker; to them, she was just mom. However warped her love, it was the strongest that they knew, and seeing her get arrested was shockingly traumatic.

Their path to recovery will be a long one. Social workers must gently, carefully disassemble the parents’ lies before the kids can even understand what’s happened to them. Once they realise the depths of their parents’ betrayal, the children will face the incredible task of learning to trust again. Healing will come gradually.

But it will come.

The exploitation is over. The trafficking has stopped.

Though the destination may seem impossibly distant at first, their journey toward a life in freedom has begun. Like countless other survivors who’ve been entrusted to government care, these children will heal, grow and learn to just be kids again. One Filipino survivor from a different case recently expressed finding new joy in the simplest things. “I’m much happier now,” she said. “I’ll be able to go back to school.”

But without intervention, the abuse would’ve continued, compounding trauma and hurt with every passing day until the kids risked becoming victims of the terrible cycle of generational exploitation.

More children are trapped in the darkness, bound by mental chains as strong as any physical ones. They cannot look for escape if they don’t know they’re in a prison.
